Making the profile picture the names initials will help a lot with visualizing assigned mails if users don't upload profile pictures instead of a standard avatar.

Yes. It is completely useless and provides no info at all to have a yahoo logo is someone is sending from a yahoo account. Initials will be better, but even better would be if it could collect images from LinkedIn etc. like Newton did. Then you could click on the photos to know more about the person.

If this is too difficult to implement, an option not to show the avatars, at least in the message list, would be appreciated. As of now it only shows random colors and logos, which help nothing but make the interface cluttered

These icons are indeed not very useful when most people emailing you are using webmail addresses (@gmail.com, @yahoo, etc) and not professional domains (which show the website’s icon). Note that there actually is a setting to disable the display of avatars in the conversation list:
