We would love to see labels and custom statuses in addition to To-do, Progress, and Closed, as the columns for this kanban view proposal. In the mean time, if you could manually sort items by drag-and-drop in a label, this could be an excellent workaround. We actually use labels and rules this way now, but we can't manually order them as you say, yet.
