Download emails locally for offline access
Phil Langlois
Hey everyone, I know this has accumulated a lot of upvotes over the years, and I wanted to explain why implementing offline mode is more complex than it might appear.
👉 The core challenge: Missive's cloud-first architecture
Missive stores all emails exclusively in the cloud (this is what makes real-time collaboration possible). Your emails don't exist on your local machine the way they would in a traditional email client. To enable offline access, we'd need to fundamentally redesign how Missive handles data synchronization and conflict resolution.
👉 The "source of truth" problem
In Missive, the cloud database is always the authoritative source for what's happening with your conversations (whether it's email or non-email convos). This works great when everyone's online, but offline mode introduces tricky scenarios. Quick examples I can think of:
#1 - You draft a reply to an assigned conversation while offline on a flight. Meanwhile, a teammate reassigns that conversation to themselves, sends their own reply and closes the convo. When you reconnect, which version wins? Should you still be assigned, or everything you did be discarded?
#2 - You're working on a conversation offline, but a manager realizes you shouldn't have access to it and removes your permissions. What happens to your local copy when you come back online?
These aren't just edge cases! They're fundamental questions about data integrity and collaboration that would require significant backend architecture changes to solve properly.
I understand it's frustrating to see no movement on a request from 2017. The reality is that offline mode would primarily benefit "solo workflows" (so to speak), while most of our development energy goes toward features that enhance collaboration, which is Missive's core strength.
I hope my explanations were able to offer some understanding as to why this is still an open feature request. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to upvote and comment on those feature requests! ✌

Phil Langlois thanks for explaining. Sounds like a lot of these issues could be solved if there would be a read only offline mode (which would already help a lot).
I also think that there should be a setting to limit the mails (e.g. only last 1year of mails downloaded).

I think this is an issue to not have offline mode when I travel.
It should be possible to download at least the last month of the history for offline use.

I have two long flights tomorrow, and it's going to be a real challenge to not be able to work on emails. I can't even use Outlook or other mail apps that do support offline anymore since they wouldn't show which emails were assigned to me before the flight.

do these feedback requests ever get looked at? this has been an issue since 2017 and i cant see anything being done about it

This is preventing most companies I know from abandoning Outlook .. This Should Not Require Any Votes !

7 years later and still nothing - thats quite extraordinary not to push this feature. You can't work with emails during flight which is massive disappointmentent

I did not realize I needed this until I needed it and then I needed it badly. Yes, please.

We have a lot of people in the team refusing to use the app because it is missing this feature! It should get some love.
